Funded Projects

Environmentally-conscious & Dynamically-adaptive Building Envelope (EDBE

The EDBE project abolishes the requirement of multiple façade technologies by providing an integrative solution to simultaneously achieve improved IEQ, resilience, energy savings. This project includes shading, variable insulation, energy generation and wind resilience (storm shutters) functionalities.

Cool Box™

The “Cool Box™” project is combined simulation and experimental research project focusing on developing a new generation of advanced shading systems. This project focuses on developing a shading system that can simultaneously maximize spatial daylight autonomy, minimize annual sun exposure, and minimize daylight glare probability.

Smart Lighting & Perceived Safety

This project utilizes virtual reality (VR) to simulate various lighting conditions and examine pedestrians' interactions in a controlled environment. This project aims to examine the comparative impact of varying lighting features (brightness, color temperature, and dynamic changes in these attributes) on pedestrians' perceived safety at night.

Urban Heat Island

This project aims to quantify the relationship between UHI and building energy consumption (BEC) and develop a spatial regression model to predict UHI intensity based on the differences in surrounding urban morphology. The development of this model solves the problem of inaccurate BEC calculations in urban areas due to lack of microclimatic data at the building location.

Advanced Modular Housing Design (AMHD)

AMHD project aims to design factory-built housing that can withstand weather events and serve as a community asset. The attributes of advanced modular post-disaster housing include appropriate structural strength and construction flexibility (resilience), high levels of energy efficiency, the potential for energy self-sufficiency (sustainability), and selection of equipment (affordability).

Hyper-Efficient, Carbon Neutral, Net Zero Energy Manufactured Homes (HECANE-NZ)

HECANE-NZ epitomizes the use of state-of-the-art technologies and high-efficacy manufacturing and scalability approaches yet, maintaining affordability to a higher degree. We will accomplish this by leveraging our research into developing hyper-efficient manufactured homes and low carbon, net zero buildings.
