Hyper-efficient, Carbon Neutral, Net Zero (HECANE-NZ) Project

A growing US population together with its increasing demand for energy has produced numerous challenges ranging from depletion of natural energy resources, to adverse environmental effects, to health-related issues for building occupants. Population growth has also made manufactured homes more popular due to their highly efficient production and assembly processes and lower capital costs. While numerous research studies have focused on energy conservation measures for site-built homes, they have not yet adequately addressed the development of hyper-energy efficient, environmentally-friendly manufactured homes.

This research aims to address this gap in the body of knowledge by designing a hyper-efficient, carbon neutral, net zero (HECANE-NZ) manufactured home that reduces the energy consumption of current HUD Code manufactured homes by at least 70%. The scope of this study will be DOE Climate Zones 1 and 2 (primarily hot and humid climates). We will accomplish this by leveraging our research into developing hyper-efficient manufactured homes and low carbon, net zero buildings. To achieve this goal, the “proposed manufactured home” will include the followings components: building envelope: HECANE-NZ will have a high-performance envelope with low U-factor wall, floor, and ceiling insulation; advanced windows with low SHGC and U-values; superior air sealing and insulation; zero thermal bridging; and modifications to roof, wall, and floor systems to accommodate significantly increased insulation; building systems: HECANE-NZ will be equipped with a direct current (DC) electrical system and appliances, a building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system coupled with an energy storage system, integrated smart home technology, a mini-split heat pump HVAC system, LED lighting, and heat pump water heating; building materials: HECANE-NZ will utilize materials with low embodied energy and that produce zero waste by means of a closed loop materials system. HECANE-NZ will remain affordable in its life cycle by benefiting from very low-operational costs.
